Hey! Who said coming to the groomer's has to be a bad thing!?
A good grooming experience starts with you, the owner. If you follow these basic steps you can help ensure that your dog will have a positive outlook on grooming.
According to "AKC Family Dog" Magazine, "Grooming is like training: if you start early and make it part of a puppy's daily routine, he'll soon learn to accept and enjoy it." As stated in the article there are three rules to help your puppy have a pleasant grooming experience.
Rule 1-"Happy, Happy, Happy"
§ " Everything, and I mean everything, to do with grooming absolutely must be happy happy happy."
§ " Young puppies are like bath sponges-they soak up every single lesson and take it to heart."
§ If you make grooming a positive, happy experience for your dog; it will adjust beautifully.
Rule 2-"One Paw At A Time"
§ "The next important thing to remember when training a new puppy to be groomed is to do things gradually.
§ "With puppies, everything is new, and while some are braver than others, introduce the next step only when your puppy is comfortable with and interested in the previous step.
§ Take every step gradually and your puppy will learn to love grooming!
Rule 3-"Routines=Puppy Magic"
§ "Whether you choose to groom every day at the same time (a good idea for puppies that will need a lot of grooming as adults, such as Poodles, Shih Tzu, Maltese, Yorkies, or Afghans) or every week at the same time (excellent for any dog, no matter how low-maintenance), it is the regularity that will make the difference."
Following these three simple rules will help ensure that your puppy enjoys every grooming experience it has!
